Ongoing Projects

Extracting Beliefs, with Jacqueline Jenkins. This is a project that started in the summer of 2023 looking at the relationships between conservatism/religion, extractive industries, and ai/automation in some of Canada’s rural towns. All along the drive west-east, there are numerous signs that celebrate ‘freedom’, oil and gas and god. There are also many '“Fuck Trudeau” signs and pro-life billboards. With all of these politics on display to drivers-by, we ask how beliefs are formed — and extracted — in relation to the land and so-called ‘natural resources’ within mainly conservative christian communities, and how emergent technologies (ai and other forms of automation) play a role in how shaping these communities and their relationships to place.

Genomic Media https://www.genomic.media
This is a project that looks at DNA-based data storage, touted as an alternative to energy and water intensive data centers. Primary Investigator (PI), Social Science and Humanities Research Council - Insight Grant “Genomic Media: Tracking Sociotechnical Imaginaries of DNA Data Storage” $147,875.00 (April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026); Funded: 2018-2020 Primary Investigator (PI), Social Science and Humanities Council - Insight Development Grant “Storing Genomic Data: New Media-Historical Contexts for "Coding Life"” $27,980.00
